Fire in the sky

As I was comparing the differences in online newspapers for the Gazet Van Antwerpen and the LA TIMES (why on earth  would I do that, I hear you sigh…) I noticed this ominous picture of smoke over the ocean and the article below which perfectly illustrates how the US handles crime compared to Belgium.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-looters17-2008nov17,0,155217.story

Hier is men voorbereid. Brandgangen bv, . En onze burgers worden niet opgeleid om te moorden en misdaden te plegen zoals de amerikanen die met een geweer in de hand geboren worden en het normaal vinden om in andere landen alles plat te gooien en in brand te steken. Herinner je Vietnam, en nu Irak en Afghanistan.”

And in the Belgian online media you can read the following “intelligent” comments by Belgians:

”If they’d stop their policy of war, they’d have more than enough money to rebuild everything. Too bad for the relatives of the dead victims whose charred bodies they’ll find in their burnt houses”
“The Americans cause these type of images the world over, and many deaths. Nature is taking its revenge kindly, no deaths have been reported yet. When they bring home the 150,000 soldiers from Iraq, this will all be solved.”

“In the civilized world, like Europe, these kinds of disasters can never happen. Over here we’re prepared. We have fire lanes etc. And our citizens aren’t raised to murder and commit crimes like the Americans who are born with a weapon in their hand and think it’s totally ok to destroy and set fire to everything in other countries. Remember Vietnam, and now Iraq and Afghanistan.”

This comment makes my head spin in so many ways-so much ignorance from one person-who feels the need to write this when confronted with the tragedy befalling innocent Californians.

Oh, how I wish I had your abilities with prose.
My head as yours is spinning having left the south of the US, I made the assumption that I had left behind the ignorant inbreeds, not moved across the world to find some of the same. Just shows the saying “when you assume you make an ass of you and me” is still true. So, if we Americans have brought this on ourselves, then how do the Belgians justify Dutroux? We all have our dirty laundry, but where the hell has our empathy for others gone? Not all Americans support Bush, McCain and the likes!!!

I’m afraid you hit the comment section of hln.be, the largest Belgian tabloid that tries to keep up the appearance of being a “news service”, like some of the fruitcakes in the comment section of FOX news in the US.

And much like those US nutcases posting vile comments at FOX news online, radical and often disturbed Belgians are offered a unmoderated soapbox for their sick comments at HLN in Belgium.

I’m afraid ignorance and stupidity have no nationality.

It’s kind of tragic that these retarded commenters are given a platform,
but ignoring rags the HLN seems the most sensible approach.

Well, It’s hard to ignore the number one newspaper in Flanders-and I have to admit, it’s fun not to ignore it-there’s so much material there to make fun of. De Morgen only allows comments on their opinion pages now….(and believe me, HLN isn’t the only Flemish newssite with idiot comments-at De Morgen they just use longer words)
    ; )
